We will be discussing the Olympics and look to uncover if there are any areas where we think the competition might be able to improve.
The 2024 Games in Paris had some amazing moments… and some not so amazing moments, but hey, that’s sport!
The Olympics are the pinnacle for most of the sports that make up the illustrious competition, and for the athletes competing, the honor of representing your country as an Olympian is something that is not easily eclipsed in the sporting world.
Full disclaimer before we begin, this piece is more so opinionated rather than backed exclusively by data and expert insights, and meant to convey what we would do should the Olympics be re-invented/adjusted.
Now, without further ado, let’s get stuck in!
I love the Olympics.
It is such a welcome addition to the sport event calendar and helps to break up the mundane of what can be a long year of sports before the lull of a summer offseason begins.
Even though I’m a sports guy, I don’t follow majority of Olympic sports in their normal competitions. Sure, I’ll pay attention to some of the bigger names and keep an eye on some of these sports and athletes here and there, but I wouldn’t exactly say I “follow” swimming, track, or gymnastics, for example.
But this is what’s fantastic about the Olympics; it is the pinnacle of not only those three sports, but of countless others. To be crowned an Olympic gold-medalist in the majority of these sports, means you’ve reached the very top.
But that can’t be the same for some sports on the Olympic roster, with a couple of those being quite popular, not only in general but as an actual Olympic event.
I won’t be going into too much depth for each sport, but rather offer a counter to what I believe may work best for a replacement or amendment to that event.
Let’s start with basketball.
