In this week’s edition of Learning the Venture, I’ll be discussing some of the things I think that the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) can do to turn the sport around in the USA.
The sport has come a long way in home of the red, white, and blue in the last 10 years since their impressive 2014 FIFA World Cup run, but things seemed to have stalled recently.
Let’s see how they can change that up!
There are a few things that the USSF could do to improve the sport of football (soccer for my American readers 😉), but below I've narrowed down the three which I think will add real value and legitimately contribute to the sport's growth.
I'll knock the easy one out of the way first, which would be to hire a new head coach for the men's national team. The USSF recently made the decision to let go of Gregg Berhalter, who was a fantastic servant for the country, and replaced him with former Spurs, PSG, and Chelsea manager, Mauricio Pochettino.
This was certainly a surprise for the football world, as Pochettino was certainly one to keep an eye on throughout the season as a big name to be linked with a top European club, once the manager merry-go-round began. He was even the rumored name to take over the England job, following Gareth Southgate’s sacking after the Euros.
To secure the services of one of the better managers in modern football for the foreseeable future, is one of the best strokes of business the USSF has made in years.
Now, with that one done and dusted, let’s take a look at the other areas where the USSF can improve or change…
